When we drink wine, we make a choice as to what type – red or white, then from there whether it will be a light table wine, or something more robust, or even a softer blush wine. Choosing the right wine glass is often overlooked, or maybe even just an afterthought. The fact is choosing the right glass with the wine, will be the key to unlocking its taste and provide you with a great experience.
You might ask why are there so many different glasses for wine? Well the simple answer is that certain shaped glasses are better for enjoying certain types of wine. Now, some will ask should the glass be stemmed or stemless. My preference is they should be stemmed (more on that later).
White Wine Glasses
White wines should be served in small bowled glasses. It’s sometimes referred to as a chardonnay glass. The shape allows for the wines aromas to be let loose but, traps them in close proximity for the nose to enjoy any subtle tones the wine projects. With heavier oaked wines a slightly larger bowl may be better.
Red Wine Glasses
The choice of a red wine glass has a lot to do with the type of wine being served. The opening helps the wine to aerate, reducing the bitterness of the tannins and bringing out the depth and flavor of your favorite Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec or Bordeaux.
It’s been said, that a good pinot noir is hard to find – and so is a good pinot noir glass. They have a beautiful balloon-shape allowing for the wine to release and open up its unique flavor profiles to the taster. Use this glass for pinot noir, gamay, Valpolicella and nebbiolo.
Sauvignon Blanc Glass
Don’t be fooled into thinking this is just a smaller Cabernet glass. With its straight sides and delicate tapered shape, it’s just right to show off the complexities of even the lightest wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Rosé.
Easily the most recognizable glass based on its shape. Tall and skinny with a narrow opening. Designed to keep the champagne, prosecco or other sparkling wine, with effervescence in check, all the way from the first to the last sip.
Stemless wine glasses may deliver function and style for today's modern world. However, because you’re holding the bowl of the glass, your wine may warm up more quickly, so stemless glasses are best used to grow herbs in, or when you have a place to set it down. Insisting on a good glass isn't snobbery— it makes drinking wine so much more enjoyable. Understanding the different types of wine glasses and what makes them ideal for one type of wine over another is essential to letting your wine show its full flavor potential.
We cannot allow outside alcoholic beverages to be on-site. We do however, encourage you to bring snacks to enjoy on our grounds, or in the tasting room. Dogs are welcome too, as long as they are leashed and well behaved.
